Centres for Independent Living

Independent Living context.

Centres for Independent Living are rooted in a clear vision: ensuring that disabled people have the concrete possibility to choose how to live, where to live and with whom to live, with the same rights and level of participation as everyone else.

For this freedom to be real, principles must become concrete conditions: support, accessibility, self-determination, personal assistance, peer support, legal protection, opportunities and full participation in the community.

Reading criteria for identifying a CIL

  • Disabled people-led: governance, priorities and services are shaped by people with lived experience.
  • Community-based and cross-disability: it works in the community, across impairments, and rejects segregating responses.
  • Focused on choice and control: it promotes personal assistance, peer support, advocacy and life outside institutions.
  • Intersectional: it considers gender, age, origin, income, sexuality, language barriers and other overlapping factors.
